Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for treatment of gout. It is used to cure high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also can be used in other situations as directed by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Visit your physician regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing treatment with Allopurinol. It can take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this medicine even if you feel well.

Allopurinol can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Use Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this pill. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, consult your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been recommended. Don't take less or more or take it more often than determined by your doctor.
